The setting for the story seems to be inspired by the fallout franchise, I haven't played any of those games so I wasn't put off but it's worth notingThings to note / interesting tidbits / Complaints:Something you should know when reading is that this contains blatant CCP propaganda. It's not awful but it is present. From what I have read it doesn't have an impact on the story other than making any country that isn't china seem like bumbling fools. Though the author does use some ccp talking points to justify some of the protagonist's more questionable decisions, so we can pretend the protagonist is 'Lawful Neutral' and so none of the citizens react negatively to s*upid and pointless slaughter. The author is a huge fan of technical mumbo-jumbo and pseudoscience and likes to give lengthy explanations on the process of making things like concrete and just about any other technique/ technology that isn't completely sic-fi. It's just fine in the novel but if you're reading the comic it's really annoying. The players due to a 'dream filter' don't register the 'game' as reality, and because of that they don't fear death, feel extreme pain, or react to realistic gore SpoilerI feel like that person read a completely different novel or didn't actually reread to try and clarify their Misunderstandings before writing a review!- I apologize if anything is inconsistent/ incoherent
however in later chapters players begin to form bonds with 'npc's
[collapse]Spoilersome players are (by chance) assigned 'characters' with non human characters
[collapse]Sometimes side characters aren't mentioned for long periods of time, which can be annoyingIn later chapters (300+) I find some plot points wayyy to coincidental for comfort (however this is minor) The players are very reckless due to their 'immortality' though not too much as they have to wait 3 days before they can login againThe players discussing the game on the forum is often humorous SpoilerAt some point the players are able to take pictures in game and upload them to the game forum, I don't know why it bothers me but it does
[collapse] Misunderstandings:I recently saw a review from someone saying that there was time travel in the novel. This is incorrect, early in the novel it is explained that the world that the 'game' takes place in is parallel to the world the players live in. This review also complains that the MC is creating the shitty 'future' by depriving the 'past' of scientific minds. While this is slightly disproved by correcting the time travel misunderstanding I felt it necessary to elaborate. The parallel worlds seem to have a 12 hour time difference, night in China is day in the 'game'. Not to mention that the device works by putting the player's body to sleep and moving the player's consciousness to the clone's body. In this way the average player's daily life goes unimpeded by the 'game'. Another 'flaw' that review mentions is how easily the MC leaves behind his life in his orginal world. Again very early in the novel its mentioned that the MC zero attachment to that life (no parents, no friends, and no love intrest) he was an average corporate s*ave that died of a heart attack (I can't remember clearly and will confirm later) and was unwillingly chosen by the former vault 404 manager.
