This novel is so, so good.To begin with, the story unfolds in 1970s China, during the height of communist rule. The protagonists are ordinary individuals, and the novel skillfully portrays the impact of communist policies on their lives. It's important to note that this book doesn't criticize communist propaganda but rather serves as a commentary on the everyday occurrences in the lives of the protagonists. The author's writing style is uniquely witty. While she simply narrates the mundane aspects of her characters' lives, these daily activities take on a fresh and unfamiliar quality for readers outside 1970s China. Consequently, the novel feels refreshingly original, and even though it revolves around ordinary activities, for some reason, you'll find it impossible to put down the book. The main character is a pragmatist through and through. Her personality is well fleshed out and relatable in many aspects. Her sole aim is to go to university, no matter what it takes. As for ML... you gotta read to find out lol. They have contrasting personalities which make their interactions funny and something to look forward to.
