Omg what happened to her personality. The girl in chapter 1, the one who was determined to go to university and was thirsty for knowledge & a better future in her own hands versus the girl in ch 15+ who nitpicks at every moment, has no belief in the ML to do anything at all (even tho she knows he at this moment has a much better grasp on memory and his capabilities than when he initially woke up & has known that he did very well living with common farmers before his accident), and is constantly making sure everything is equal while always never allowing herself or him any "lavishness for any sense of enjoyment or ceremony" because she wants to save money all the time.... understandable no doubt but it's excessive and heavy to read. She painfully doesn't enjoy life and I know that the ML is there to show her and contrast her but ahh

I'm still reading. I am hoping she gets better again. Because this romance is very interesting no doubt. Unique and well written despite a couple illogical cause and effect moments to push the MC along the plot. You can tell despite the awkwardness that they really care for each other.

Low-key who needs a fictional distopia when you have china in the 70s SHEESH. Maybe I should be less harsh on the MC as she is a product of this corrupt time period & everyone is using everyone for something except for the ML, which makes it hard to read still. Idk it's depressing but highly intriguing to read as it is a historical and fresh perspective to read about such a detailed version of this time. ITS HARD TO READ personally as someone who likes to read a chill relaxed books with easygoing MCs. BUT I GGET WHY SHES LIKEE THIS. Bc this is the point of the novel. Everyone is making it worse bc this time period had no way to progress for talented people, it suffocated poor young talented people to be absolutely miserable. On a writing and historical standpoint, this book is excellent, a masterpiece honestly.

My overall opinion is if you like something historicalish with real characters suffering then you'll like this. If you want to read something uplifting and relaxing, it might take awhile and this might not be the easiest read. It does get there eventually. Updated: ok I love them both. I stand by everything I said, but I admit the author played me like a fiddle. I love their growth and romance.

Minus 1 star for one reason: OMG I COULD WRITE A DISSERTATION ON HOW sh*t OF A PARTNER the ml's sister is to her husband. Holy shiitake and the fact we get only a hint of an ending for them despite all of it... I could fight someone.
