How a D-Class Alchemist Avoids Death Chapter 60 Discussion

MC is a police officer who reincarnates into a novel as a... not a villain exactly but an infamously shitty person that everyone dislikes. Uses his knowledge to get OP to get a way to go back to his original world. Except when he acquires a special item that can heal people, one of the side affects is that they get addicted to the power immediately, so they become fixated on the MC. Struggle ensues.

This story is SO CLOSE to being great, but there are a few writing and character quirks that are annoying. Like how the MC understands that the character he's possessing and his brother have a complicated relationship, and while they don't get along the bro still cared about him and was devastated when he died. Yet, when they start to reconcile, MC is like "why are you being nice I thought you didn't care??" Like dude we know he cares because you said so. It feels like the MC thinks and acts in certain ways at some times to force the situations that the author wanted to write about. Author either needed to get better at writing to make scenes come out naturally or use a different MC.

A lot of characters just DO NOT listen to the MC and WILL NOT act in his best interests even if they say otherwise. MC's "hero" brother just never listens to anyone in general and always starts fights with people for no reason. A lot of characters in general are written as weirdly stubborn. It has a lot of the same problems I have with "S-Classes That I Raised" but worse, where people don't act like real people in a way that feels overly forced. Hunters that become affected by the purification ability BARELY have an excuse, but hunters before purification and everyone else including non-hunters is also susceptible to suddenly acting more like grade-schoolers than adults. It's not explained away as being the fault of the original novel's writing either, and the MC notes that the original protagonist acts super differently (though he does go through some sh*t in the book that could have affected his personality).

There's actually a lot about the MC I like. I appreciate how the MC does the thing that not enough MC's do and uses his body's reputation to do whatever he wants. He doesn't "try to lay low" only to fail and attract attention instead like other transmigration MCs. If people start questioning him he'll argue back to avoid explaining himself. While he and the brother are still on terrible terms, MC doesn't lose arguments or let things go or explain that he's changed or whatever to try to get along and make things go smoother. MC doesn't hesitate to argue with him. He also doesn't do the thing that's like "I have to avoid the protag to avoid trouble!" only to become unable to avoid him. MC decides that it would be good if he and the brother could eventually get along but it would also be fine if they break off ties entirely. There are more tiny details about the MC that I like, which is why the inconsistent writing is so frustrating.

It's a good story and different compared to a lot of other Hunter/Gate stories, and while it has it's flaws it's worth trying out if you want something new. But the 4/5 is being generous because I like the MC.
