Just to clear up the confusion by "I never could make good usernames, " I don't think the physics is that bad. So far most inconsistencies can be explained by magic appropriation.

transistors in analog computers can amplify current. It's the basis of analog computing, and also the first line in wikipedia. It also only acts as a power up, more energy is still needed. My guess is that traditional methods of increasing power were horribly inefficient.
