It is a gender bender (it's not important in the story though, in fact you would never know MC was a man if there weren't a few cringe jokes/tropes).

Some concepts are done poorly, some are done well. Klais' character's role (Aether's owner) serves more than as a common evil lady trope and could be seen as the Spoiler

catalyst for the world's destruction.

[collapse] She's a really important character, and serves a far greater role than just a means for Aether to enter the academy.

I am horrible about reviews, but I agree with most of the reviews it's worth a read.
