I previously wrote a long review however it seems to have never posted. The MC is a complete A-hole. He's a cruel, misogynistic, back-stabbimg b*stard and you'll hate him for the first quarter of the book. After a while, you come to understand why he's like that and you can see that he cares for his people. However, there are a few chapters which were hard to stomach. There is a lot of racism when the Japanese aka Neon show up. There is also blatant racism and disgust shown by the MC and other characters about a mixed race child. The mother is Chinese and the father is black and he refuses to save them just for that reason alone because he's so disgusted about her breeding with a black guy. The anti-neon stuff happens a few times, the anti-black thing is a couple of paragraphs in the chapter. It almost made me stop reading it because the vitriol was so hateful. It makes me wonder if all Chinese think like that.

The concept of the book, the growth of the MC and the people around him kept me going. Sometimes you just want to see how things end up. If the author can keep the hate out of the book, or even drop those chapters entirely, it would make for a much better read. The problem with all web novels is as always, the lack of a good editor and the need to pump out X number of words per chapter. That of course leads to excessive wordiness and the book going off tangent.

Apparently the original review I wrote ended up getting posted on the wrong book. Here's my first review

I started off with the Manhua and really enjoyed it so I moved on to the novel. As everyone says, the MC is a real a-hole in the beginning to the point that you didn't really like him. However, he has every right to be. Spoiler

He's been betrayed, killed and chopped up & eaten alive by his so called friends and his girlfriend whom he loved

[collapse]. However later on as he becomes more powerful and more comfortable with those he has chosen to keep around him, he obviously warms up and begins to find love for his new found family in his heart. He's willing to do anything to protect them but doesn't care about anyone else except those he has deemed family. He'll set up, leave behind, betray and kill anyone who interferes with his life. It's a really great premise and while the MC is a little OP, his power is based on his obsession with staying alive. So he developed the absolute defense and the ability to store everything he needs so he'll never go without food or the comforts of life. Great book.
