Villager A Wants to Save the Villainess no Matter What! Chapter After 17 Discussion

Overall very enjoyable but the setup for the second half conflict was very, very forced. Also, the author seemed to realize he couldn't justify the main character's vulnerability if he kept showing him level up so he just completely stopped showing his stats or level.

The last time they showed it he mentioned that he would have been able to beat the final battle with his current level if he was the original characters, and that was before he went through the most difficult dungeon and started repeating it to level and farm drops.

Even the "villainess" was made way too weak to have the second half of the story happen. I was really expecting her to save herself.

It was also very surprising to see how brutal they ended things. Even blaming the "heroine" only makes sense as to just how bad things got while the King and Crown Prince could have stopped her at any time up until her endgame form. I took her punishment and previous attempted punishments as the underlying misogyny that seems to pervade LNs, but it's always disappointing to see. Even her character as a former fat girl who wanted male attention just screams cliche stereotype.

All that being said, I really enjoyed the non-crappy characters throughout—which is pretty much everyone except the heroine, her reverse harem, the king, and the eastern empire people. It's really a testament to the characterization of the characters and their relationships that all the very easy-to-fix writing problems don't completely wreck the story.

The romance was also quite great.

Not sure if I'll read chapters ~50/60 through 98 again (or the after-story), but I would enjoy reading everything else.

Edit: There are 17 additional chapters on Syosetsu (though apparently all of the main story content was removed). The first few are cute things with the couple but after that they seem to be having a minor adventure that seems fine but not really seeing any story. I may be judging them a little harshly because they're so short and it hasn't been updated in 5 months, so I'm a little reluctant to give up the wrapped up ending for something that doesn't have the author's attention.

Lastly, I read the afterword on kakuyomu and there the author mentioned they got a lot of grief over Allen's s*upidity. I never thought Allen or Anna acted s*upidly. Their actions made sense for their characters, but what was done to them was forced and they were set up to fail in ways that did not seem believable. It wasn't them being "s*upid", but them going from being able to beat a legendary monster to being taken out by mobs. I think in the entire story Allen only made one real mistake and it would have made sense for some repercussion to come from that in my opinion, just went way too far and was too forced. That being said, Allen does seem more irrational in the after story chapters so if you are someone who thought he was "s*upid" or inconsistent in the main story, then I imagine you'll be more turned off by him in those... but maybe I'm missing something in the machine translation.
