Don’t Pretend to be Poor with Me Chapter 87 Discussion

I really liked this story. Song Yang is such an endearing character that was able to keep his kindness and warmth even after being raised by a horrible father and a mother who ended up unlucky enough to meet his father and ultimately become a bad parent to him as well.

Song Yang and Xia Zhiye's relationship is so adorable. They're really suited for each other. They have such cute and funny moments together. I loved the side characters who were all well fleshed out.

One thing I didn't like was how the book portrayed Xia Zhiye's grandfather. As if he was a good, loving grandfather but just strict. In the end, he was a bad guardian. When it came down to actually caring for his grandson's well-being and happiness, his h*mophobia was more than the love he had for Xie Zhiye.

It's told he kept the MC and ML away from each other because he doesn't want Zhiyue to walk a difficult path but this doesn't make sense as he was completely okay with Zhiyue walking a difficult path in living without money. He had no problem taking it away as punishment so that he can grow from it. So no, it wasn't because he cared about his grandson. It was simply because he was homophobic and he convinced himself it stemmed from love when it was just shallow love that was overshadowed by outdated and "traditional" beliefs.

My favorite character had to be Song Yang as I felt I understood him and why he was so cold. He went through so much as a child from both his parents but in the end, he couldn't completely hate his mother and still visits her grave. He understood the person to blame was his father because his mother too was a victim. This doesn't free her of the things she did but in the end she met a tragic end because she fell in love with a horrible man. As for his father, Song Yang couldn't forgive him but even when his father got what he deserved, he couldn't hate him. Song Yang, although he seems cold, is actually a really softhearted person. As a child his father never let him cry or show any emotions because he thought it would make him like his mother who would have outbursts. His father cheated on his mother and drove her to commit su*cide. Even after all this, he treated Song Yang as if he wasn't human. I will never understand how a parent can do something like this to their children. How can you willingly have children only to treat them like that. A child, no matter how young, is still a person worthy of respect and dignity.

I really enjoyed the story and loved the relationship between the MC and ML. They're both green flags and care so much about each other. They showed more maturity at 17 than any of their guardians ever would in a lifetime.
