Somehow, it's really funny? Even though the narrator speaks quite plainly, it still makes me laugh. This part for example: "Who am I to be blamed for my poor test scores?" The MTL style uses short, simple sentences, but I feel it fits this story very well. The narrator is both exactly what I'd expect from this genre and also feels rather disconnected emotionally. I think it's the way she describes her emotions.Spoiler
In one scene, she's being pinned down by three upperclassmen and getting bullied. In response, she casually makes the observation that she's afraid. I found this dissonance to be jarring, not in a unpleasant way. That's the feel of this novel.
[collapse]This is the normal love story story of a not very normal girl. I feel like it's very real; the characters are deeper than I expected going in. It's not really a grand story, but it's a little touching. In the end, I ended up dropping it, but I don't regret picking it up.
