This novel is more slice of life than anything. FL stands true to her belief of not giving her heart away. Palace intrigue isn't so sinister and complicated with many twists and turns. It almost feels abit unbelievable that there were many concubines who knew how to behave. Maybe I'm used to novels where all concubines at least would be fighting for favour and digging pits for themselves. Spoiler

We never get to see at the end though what the emporer really thinks of FL. So I won't say it's a truly happy ending. Settling and being content would be more likely.

Having said that, it is a good change of pace to go from reading non-stop, blood boiling drama to slice of life.

It might get abit too slow paced for some readers though.

If you've come from reading The Job of an Imperial Concubine, then this is much more inferior compared to that.

Still worth a read if you've got nothing else to read.
