Much darker than I first assumed based on the description but has very good storytelling, actual character development (& moving characters), and a really good translation quality.2024 Update: After two attempts, I ended up dropping this novel. Halfway through the plot, the vibe completely changes to the most stereotypical interstellar plot with a empty headed MC and stereotypical, showoff-y ML. That would be okay if that's what I was reading for but the contrast between the depth of the first section and the shallowness of the second killed the story for me.
