In Cairo we now have a mystery on our hands, the boys need to find where Dio is through a photograph. However, whether the people are ignorant or on his side, they can’t get any hints. That is, until D’arby the gambler struck a deal. I like the fact that he has a moustache because Araki said making a trustworthy man with a moustache in Will Zeppeli was a risk because he would look untrustworthy. D’arby on the other hand will probably not be a risk at all.
Firstly, I want to mention how this is another moment we can see how Joseph has grown. Remember back in Battle Tendency when ACDC shipped off the Super Aja. Joseph needed information, he was rejected, and he scared the hell out of the mailman with feints! It wasn’t his family on the line necessarily, but the world was on the line, and he was hotheaded and quick to pick a fight. Here, he quickly apologized and offered money, understanding that punching his way through his obstacle wasn’t going to cut it. Then when Polnareff started to yell at D’arby, somewhat similar to what I’d expect Battle Tendency Joseph to do, he exclaimed: “Polnareff! Lose the attitude. That’s not the way to ask for things.”
It was quickly deduced what this stand user had to offer. Like playing a game with the devil for your soul, or the game master from Yuyu Hakusho who forced people to play games with him, it’s that scenario. One of someone who is probably unfairly advantaged and with this setup it gives a lot of potential. We may get to see the exact kind of gamble each character thinks they can beat D’arby in and that can show off their character. Also, in the fact that everyone can lose excluding one person, likely Jotaro because he’s too cool, it means we may see many losses.
By the way, I want to appreciate that even with Joseph in the party, Polnareff is the butt of the jokes and the main key in keeping the tone of the series as light as it is. Araki has no issue putting him in compromising situations.
