I feel like the quality of Stardust Crusaders has progressively gone up! Hanged Man, Empress, Justice, Lovers, Death 13, and N’Doul have all been some of my favorite arcs. They’ve been full of cool interactions, and stands. In this case, I think this is just totally fun and a great introduction to the unique skill set of Iggy, the mutt that must be forced to work alongside them. The stand itself reminds me of the water monster from the Amnesia game, hiding under the surface and attacking at any movement in the water. Or probably a better example is any sand monster like from Shadow of the Colossus or Legend of Zelda. The exhilarating feeling of reading this reminds me of playing those games, the terror of this creature tearing through the sand and taking your friends out one by one. In horrific ways at that! First Kakyoin’s eyes and then Abdul’s throat! But Abdul did darn good. Tricking N’Doul with his bracelets and even burning him before he realized something was amiss.
Then! Jotaro ran away to distract N’Doul and save Abdul, not so different from what Joseph did to save Caesar and Speedwagon from Wham many years ago. It’s the kind of strength I love seeing Jotaro show, that which requires risking his life, or pride, without also pummeling his enemy to death. It was just that, and that head of his! Having observed Iggy’s ability to sense, he did a running dog grab in a page that looks just absolutely hilarious. From there, he threatened him with suicide, either he helps, or they both die. Brutal!!! I adore that kind of thing.
Seeing N’Doul’s incredible but limited power was also way satisfying. He’s able to sense exactly who is walking by the weight and manner of their steps. He remembers where everyone is. He even picks on when something is amiss. However, things such as the Fool flying them away completely takes him out of his element and he can be fooled. Yet, even when fooling him, there’s immense fear in being revealed and dying before you can even react.
“What should I do? Should I kill the dog first?” - The question Araki asks himself while writing manga everyday.
