I had thought of the possibility of brute forcing this fight. It’s an easy thing to imagine. The badass protagonist, not unlike Jotaro, has this stand attach to his brain. And rather than dealing with it through other means, he decides to make a point. He can sustain 10x the damage of his worthless foe, and still live. He pummels them with an oraoraoraoraora while nearly killing himself in the process. Covered in blood, he stays standing like Zoro in that iconic panel: “nothing happened!” But, by affecting Joseph, the type of guy who doesn’t brute force it, and doesn’t take much accidental damage compared to other protagonists, it didn’t become that kind of, while cool, predictable fight. Rather the gang ran away, trying to get to a position where Joseph could use Hermit Purple because Lovers is one of the stands without a meaningful range limit. I presume stands will follow a kind of logic where they will be made, on the nose, to make them as strong or interesting as the plot calls for. One could imagine this stand as one with a small range, but because it’s more interesting to defeat it in a different way, that exception is made.
I had gotten excited, thinking that we would see Hierophant Green’s ability to possess another person and thus it would create a battle of two stands with the unique ability to enter another person’s body. However, we got a somewhat less satisfying solution to this in my opinion. Kakyoin made a good point, one should be able to alter the size of their projected life energy(their stand). And using logic, we can presume shrinking a stand is less energy than growing one, which would explain why people don’t fight with gigantic stands all the time. This also gives potential for great stand sneak attacks. Either way, they flew into Joseph’s ear to fight against the stand from inside of him. This made me question if Araki had forgotten that the way Polnareff won against Devo the cursed was by shattering a mirror to see him from under the bed because his stand could only see what he saw. However, my friend suggested that as Joseph is creating a peak into his head, Polnareff could control Silver Chariot by looking at that. Assuming it’s following the stands, this is a fine solution and a cool mix of powers being used.
Steely Dan, despite looking pretty cool, has been characterized as a guy with slightly too much conceit. He believes he is invincible and is taunting Jotaro quite humorously, bullying such a normally standoffish and buff hero. This is making Dan to be dispatched satisfyingly as fodder which is slightly disappointing because I like his design so much but I presume it will be executed well. Further, the way this is building on Jotaro’s character is excellent! Joseph got to see Jotaro taking a beating for his sake, a family bonding moment for sure, and Jotaro, despite showing so much anger that he nearly killed his grandpa through Dan, has swallowed his pride. He has let Dan use him as a bridge!! Jotaro has been a good guy, going so far to risk his life to save others without hesitation, but he’s always depicted as the badass cool guy when he does it. Here, while still being cool and not showing much weakness until near the end, he is throwing away all of that and showing that deep down the ultimate goal for him in this moment, is Joseph’s safety. It’s sweet.
I had assumed that all Joestar’s would have some level of respect towards their enemies and a deep love for their family. Jonathan was the epitome of both of these in their purest sense, and while Joseph could be misunderstood to lack these, he did ultimately show them! To remove these features would be subversive, and with the lack of enemies deserving of Jotaro’s respect, I have to wonder if he will ever show empathy like that of Jonathan towards Speedwagon, or that of Joseph’s respect towards ACDC. On the other hand however, Jotaro definitely has the family love pinned down, and like the former Jojo's; a heart of gold to protect the weak. A Joestar without that, say one that would have killed Suzie Q to get to ACDC, or one that would abandon their family, that would be ridiculously subversive!!!
