An absolutely cliche, Mary Sue novel... but one that’s very written well enough. You know this story. You know every beat, you know what will happen, and even if you didn’t there’s no tension, but it’s still enjoyable. It’s a fun read instead of a slog to get through, it flows well, it has a good translation, and sits easy in the brain. It’s like junk food. Yes it’s bad for you, and yes the bones of this novel are bad, but the packaging and the flavour are spot on. Sometimes you want to curl up with a bowl of chips, and if that’s your mood this one seems to be worth the figurative calories.
