Good OCR program/How to do MTL

TBH I just want to make it easier for me to read kanji rather than using it for MTL. Just searching the right kanji by radical is time-consuming and takes away the fun of reading. And since I imagine MTL needs editable text to even work that there's already some go to programs in LN translation community (just like PhotoShop is in scanlation community).

So I need it to be accurate enough to pick up kanji (from Japanese) tho I imagine that's the part where OCRs make most mistakes? Also vertical text... 

I don't think that there is a go to OCR

As someone who works with OCR'd documents and the headaches they cause during and after translation on a daily basis, I would suggest having a thorough look through and cleaning the OCR before even thinking about dumping it into a machine. I've used a majority of programs during work and the OCR technology gets iffy when it comes to CJK characters. A majority of the time, you'll just get gibberish or characters that resemble the actual text but are slightly different. 

Have you tried using the handwriting function in Google Translate? It's faster for me than going through the list of radicals.
However, once again, you'll have to be careful of similar looking kanji, such as 緑 vs. 縁 or 日 vs. 曰
See if you can invest in someone to retype the text. I would help, but I'm busy with my own translations right now.
