I've yet to write anything about Mr. Satan, but he's actually one of my favourite characters from the series. Most of that will come later, but this is the first instance where he actually does something of importance that shows his nature. He might be a joke to our heroes and to the readers, but he actually wants to be a hero and he does want to help, he doesn't even need any persuasion. And his action does actually matter.
Gohan's rage kicks in... And time for a personal anecdote from when I first experienced this story. I read the manga when I was young and so did some of my friends. I collected the volumes but I was a bit behind and sometimes I would read bits from later volumes that my friends would show me. The fight against Cell and this moment especially was obviously something my friends wanted to show me, and so I read this part without having the full context of the arc. Reading it, I obviously assumed Gohan and C16 had some kind of relationship. C16 seemed to be a kind character that cared about nature and animals, similar to Gohan. And it's C16's death that triggers Gohan's rage, so he had to care about him very deeply, as seeing his two dads and friends being tortured did not trigger that reaction. Wow, powerful moment, little me thought.
Turns out, I was completely wrong. C16 hardly does anything throughout the story other than some comments about birds. Gohan and C16 only meet just as this Cell Game is beginning, and they don't even say anything to each other. Maybe I'm especially harsh because I built up another story in my head, but I don't get why Toriyama would chose C16 to have this important role.
Still, it's pretty effective with Cell crushing his head. But it could have been so much better.
