One of the themes of this manga. People have to know everything. If they don't know something, then it's labeled as bad and must be destroyed. We do this with cultures, animals, etc.
it's also a religious metaphor. Once Chris learned to talk, he could never visit paradise again. Similar to eating the fruit of knowledge.
