So, that volume had an unexpected Kazuo vs Mitsuko encounter right at the beginning, leaving only four players in the story, and Kawada's backstory explored with some supporting words from Noriko.
That was a very surprising way for Mitsuko to die, I was expecting at least a run in with Shuuya's gang. The way she tried to give herself to Kazuo to take his trust, only to end up crawling for her ring covered in blood, how sad. Seeing her as a happy little girl with her first father was tragic, reading in between the lines I think we can safely assume it was the first event that sent the insanity ball rolling. I can only assume that her new step father was that important to her, and she must of given him everything to make sure he wouldn't leave, only for him to start beating her and to throw her to the curb. She was adorable when she was a young girl, and now look at her. That's seriously some horrible stuff. I loved the shot of her getting shot with all of the versions of herself in her mind. I wonder what it is which defines Kazuo when he's alone.
It was interesting hearing about the different locations the games are played at in Kawada's backstory. An urban ghetto would make for a much different game than the island they're on now. It was really weird to me how Keiko, a classmate, mailed him the bird call at the end of the day rather than bringing it with her to give it to him the next day, or even putting it in his bag or something if she was embarrassed. Maybe she just dropped it off and he never saw it I suppose. Even if that bit is a little bit unnatural it explains why he has a bird call, it's believable at least apart from that one moment. His backstory makes why he has such a soft spot for Shuuya and Noriko make more sense, as well as it shows a lot about him. If he was that much like the 'mad dog' Kazuo, I wonder if it'll be that hard to get through to him. Still, very different scenarios, Kawada at least had Keiko, he wasn't that much of a sociopath. This made me really trust Kawada more than I did before. I don't think we would get half a volume of backstory if he hadn't really changed.
Two volumes left huh. I wonder how much of it will be dedicated to Kazuo's backstory, if any. I'm expecting it with how the manga is alluding to family problems with that family picture he smashed and possibly took. May of misunderstood, but a bag of glass made me assume he took the entire picture with the glass.
