Least favorite volume so far. It wasn't necessarily bad, but I find Kayoko boring, and Sugimura isn't the most interesting dude in the world when he's the main focus. Not only that but not too much happened, and I felt the ki talk went over my head, I get it was that: strength without self awareness is aggression or whatever, and to be truly strong you need to understand what you're fighting for, but it went on for awhile and I didn't get too much from it.
Was the point to say that having no concerns for others will make you the strongest, no matter what passion you have, or at least hinting at that with even the strength of his training and passion for Kayoko not pulling him through this fight. I suppose the true meaning of this will come true at the end, with who comes out victorious, either of this specific fight or of the Program. Speaking of that fight, man, I like the over the top violence and action in Battle Royale but that got really anime, some DBZ stuff. Kazuo continues to be a dragon ball z cyborg from the future, dodging attacks all over, using a knife he teleported into his hand, and even putting the moves on an Olympic level Judo man from reading a book, and only after surviving an explosion that took out a building with no explanation. I do concede however, that Kazuo popping that teachers eye was pretty gnarly.
And the line came up again, in chapter 80, where Sugimura was trying to take care of the cat but was unable to figure out what was wrong with it. "No good deed goes unpunished". Very strong theme in this manga, with anyone trying to do the "right" thing meeting an unfavorable end, most likely accomplishing nil.
So yeah, volume was pretty boring contrasted to the rest, and not because no death happened in it either, just because the characters and the story progression that happened were not that interesting to me. With two guns out for fair play, Kayoko on Sugimura's side, and Mitsuko and Shuuya's gang potentially on their way, looks like this set up for quite an explosive start for next volume.
