This chapter gave us so much context.  It seems like Aion wants Chrno back and before being locked away he was with Magdala(of Magdalene?) and she most likely touched Chrno's heart in such a way that he refused to restart the world with a new found appreciation for it.  That's my interpretation although what we do know for a fact is 50 years ago he was with a certain Magdala and Aion took probably her from him to show him the emptiness in his heart.  Aion realizing the resemblance of Rosette and Magdala has taken a deep interest in her now and says he has a seat for Chrno to view the end of pandemonium and the rebirth of the world.  Scary.  Til then wait for the astral rain is pretty ominous too.  Are they going to destroy the astral line by using the apostles?  Either way it's when this event occurs that the rebirth might take place...

What a awful chapter for the characters involved.  Remington and Guliam overpowered Jenai and got him stuck in a barrier and almost saved the day.  They even got Aion at checkmate and froze Joshua in place.  If it wasn't for Fi things may have turned out differently.  But instead we got that beautifully constructed page of Fi teleporting into Guliams sniper scope and taking him out and everything changed. Aion overpowered Remington now without backup and Joshua, now free, freezes Azmaria in the same horrifying way he froze the orphans.  It ends with a panel showing the horror that just occurred.  Az has been taken. The city has been devastated. Guliam and Remington are hurt. Chrno and Rosette are nearly dead.  Everything was an absolute failure.  Normally manga and anime don't like to get this heavy so that's one strength in Chrno Crusade in that it's not afraid to push lines.

I also want to briefly mention how I love Remington's sword design, and how cool it was to see Bid carrying his decapitated arms in his shoulder stumps.

The manga diverged from the anime quite a bit in chapter 22 and it continued until now, but now we're going into absolutely new territory.  Exciting.
