I finished Claymore today after some months of reading and I have to say that I had a lot of enjoyment overall. But I had mixed feelings once I finished it. I'm a bit sad. I have so much I would like to say although I will not go very deep and will be a bit messy.
This series had a lot of great moments, great twists, great characters and development, great mysteries and also great fights. But also some of the chapters towards the mid-end -around ch. 116 when the 3 old nº1's are ressurrected by the Org.- were very slow and kind of boring. I thought this part was expendable and it lasted for too long... The several battles against Priscilla was dragged for too long too and wasn't expecting to see Theresa back. Her apparition was well executed though.
Many ppl say the series goes downhill after Pieta's battle, I can understand that it has some moments like that, because let's be honest the first 11 and a half volumes were insanely great. Everything that happened was pure gold, the tension was palpable and everyone could die.
Then the next volumes still has great moments I enjoyed a lot: like the reveal of the Claymore's alive and the subsequent Ghost crew & their journey on the shadow, Clare's progressing & skills, the discovering of the island and the main land (with 2 nations in war), the Organization secrets, Miria's battle alone against the Org., her return from death and all Claymore's joining forces to destroy the Org., Galatea's surviving after Pieta, Raki's appearance, good moments of 'ol Rubel, Clare and Raki's meeting after 7 years and I could keep going.
But I also was highly dissapointed to see that the main land discover was just honey on the lips. It had so much potential... I was very excited when Miria revealed that. I feel bad it somehow didn't take that route and went with the ressurrected #1's instead. Priscilla fighting and in AO's mode through volumes 18-27 also lasted very long imo. We saw so much from her power that the final fight didn't feel so tense, it was rather obvious the destiny of it with Theresa's emergence.
I also didn't like that there were so many new Claymore's introduced, Clarice and Miata's journey and to see Isley's potential in the story to be vanished so soon. Seeing him falling was a touching moment, even when we didn't get to see him much, he was my fav. abyssal out of the 3. But I still like when I saw him after the 7 years lapse, how he was insane in that place alone, his fighting and his last words.
About the abyss feeders? Well, I don't dislike that Yagi introduced them as some ppl do (although they relegated the AO's), I hate way more the 3 ressurrected nº1's part as I said before. They also added a dark and devastating atmosphere I really liked when they first appeared.
Alicia and Beth potential was a bit wasted too, I thought they would give more game. Seeing Riful's reeincarnation or whatever that was against Priscilla didn't make too much sense. All in all, I thought the 3 AO's (Isley, Luciela and Riful) would have much more protagonism. They were isolated too soon, specially the first 2. I wish we knew more about Isley and his journey with Raki.
And after Pieta it definitely lost part of the tension for main characters to possibly die. They were too protected at the end. I wished we would of see Denev/Helen, Yuma, Cynthia and maybe even Miria die in a big battle even if it would be sad. Seeing that they all survive makes Tabitha's death a waste.
About the last chapter it tied all Claymore's fate quite well, Teresa's final inner dialogue with Clare was great and touching, we even discovered Irene was alive (didn''t care too much though, at least not to be for the last 2 pages) and I'm kind of dissapointed we didn't saw Clare and Raki in a more close moment although we can foreshadow it. I would say that the last page could of been better if it was when Clare smiles to Raki and says him to follow her and live the life? Idk as I said the end page of the manga with Clare visiting Irene left me a bit cold.
I feel kind of empty now. I got to Claymore thanks to reading over here someone comparing it with SNK (which I also love), so after some time I finally gave the anime a try. And I'm so happy I did. I enjoyed it a lot (finished in August 2015), although the last 3 episodes were not so good. But this series had something special so I needed to buy the manga to know how it continued. And I don't regret reading/buying it. All these months reading has been a great experience. And will definitely keep listening to the great OST. :' -) I'm still unsure on what rating I should give to Claymore, it will either be an 8 or 9. I wish I could give it a 10 but some of the later events will not allow it.
I will re-read it again someday to catch anything that could have escaped from me. At least I still have Berserk on-going and to a less extent SNK.
All in all, if someone wants to talk about Claymore you can hit me in my profile or add to friends. I will gladly get you back. ^^
