"I should hope that the explanation is more interesting than some tedious issue of willpower."
Haha, that put a smile on my face knowing how a lot of characters in other shounens are able to overcome all odds with some simple willpower. I'm glad Claymore is more logical and thought out.
IMO, the only down-side to the so called 'will power' is simply how it's used in shounen manga, but I don't doubt it's existence if re-worded correctly. Will power could be linked with the brain selfishness's of survival, and 'survival' (or rather, reason for living) is also associated with protecting someone else, so even if the concerned person is not in front of death but his 'reason of living' is, the 'will power' phenomenon can occur.
It's simply exaggerated to no end in shounen manga, but it's not one of the most unrealistic elements you often come across. It's pretty much how I see it though, and I don't really believe it in shounen manga since their aim is simply "Don't give up" and not "We'll prove that everything here is scientifically correct in some extreme situations even though we've emphasized it endlessly."
In the end, I'm still glad I saw that lady say that sentence in this manga making fun of that too, since lack of originality is too common. Even though it's considered shounen, I don't really see Claymore like that; I don't rank it with mainstream series such as Naruto or Bleach genre-wise.
I'm not saying willpower isn't logical, but as you say it's overused so much in shounens that it was nice to finally see it cast aside. I too don't really see Claymore as a shounen, it seems to me more like a seinen, but it is labeled as a shounen so I couldn't help but comment on that quote. Also, that two-face thing was a woman? I thought it was a man. :P
