*Wipes tear from eye*
I'm so proud of the males of the fandom! Good job boys <3
I could write several essays about how and why Fairy Tail is empowering. But, for starters, fanservice DOES NOT necessarily mean sexism. Often times, in anime at least, it does- But in Fairy Tail, the fanservice goes BOTH WAYS. You think there's some deep meaning behind Gray's stripping habit?
Look at Wonder Woman for example. She's plenty sexified, but no one with even the smallest knowledge of feminism and it's history will deny that she embodies female empowerment.
Lucy is proud of herself. Also, she's not a slut- She's a spoiled 17 year old rich girl who matures drastically throughout the series. And that scene with her dad- That is one of my favorite scenes in anything ever. Such a powerful and empowering scene.
Bisca proposes to Alzack, and when they have a kid, she continues to work and go on missions. She does not become a housewife. Bisca is insanely empowering.
Oh God don't even get me started on Risley Law. She's chubby, but she can change her body shape at will- she could walk around as her sexy version, but by CHOICE, she doesn't. It's not because the powers wear off- it's because she LIKES HER CHUBBY FORM.
I don't think I even need to explain Erza.
Cana is a great example of sex-positive empowerment. She sleeps around, this is stated in the series and is canon- But she is not shown as being a horrid person for doing so. She gets drunk constantly, but again, is not shown as a horrid person. She is still strong and admirable in her own way and doesn't let anyone tell her what to do.
Mirajane... Ohhh God Mirajane is just wonderful. Mirajane is a character where the fanservice actually adds to her character. She is a swimsuit model for Sorcerer Weekly, but she is not seen as a slut for doing so. On the contrary, everyone views her as the sweetest, most down to earth woman ever. And she does this work because she lost her power and had to support her brother- She's representative of women who have to become waitresses and strippers just to eck out a living for their kids (sibling in this case), and she does this BEAUTIFULLY by being respected despite what she does for a living.
Women are constantly shown to not only battle men, but win. Constantly. This is a theme throughout the series.
The men of Fairy Tail, throughout the series, state how strong their women are.
The female friendships in Fairy Tail are beautiful.
Fairy Tail is one of the most empowering series out there, even with the fanservice. It's SO EMPOWERING that it more than compensates for the fanservice 10x over.
Oh, and for the record, I had a problem with the torture fanservice- But then ERZA AND MIRA SAVED THEMSELVES. They didn't need the boys to rescue them. They did it all on their own. So I then forgave Mashima 100% because that was awesome.
I could go on, but I will stop there. =)
