It was instantly though. Even with shadow Melding he wouldn't appear there instantly to possess Lucy. Plus pretty sure wendy would have picked up his scent. I think it's more likely the gate itself is speaking to Lucy. Think like how the book spoke in the Starry sky arc

LUCY STOP! DON'T GO TO THE LIGHT. LIGHT IS BAD!
