----------------------------------------
This sequence feels like the dog sequence to me in an unfortunate way. Like back then, it has a focus on time going forward rather than lingering on the moment.. Gai and Ogawa are hiding together, often in a sofa, for days, that is a struggle! I feel this manga is lacking on the character department and that could seriously strengthen Gai further and give Ogawa some more foundation to work on. It could humanize the both of them too! I wanna see them try and figure out how to use the washroom, I want to see what they are surviving on… Is it just sugar cubes?! All that said, it made me grateful for the small moment of tea drinking together. And also, Gai is so mentally strong it’s crazy. He ended up getting the tape and they are close to winning but it’s created a moral dilemma.. Does Gai let some kid be branded in his place and used as a scapegoat?
The other half of the chapter was the director being a serious doofus. He almost started to look through the building again but came to the conclusion that Gai isn’t here or he would have gotten the tape already. I’m curious myself over if Gai chose not to get it as to trick Sawai or if searching would have been too big of a risk. The director speaks out loud in a moment of comedy gold regarding putting it with the tapes he searched as “a blind spot of his consciousness” without realizing Gai is in his blindspot, the same terminology the narrator used for Gai’s hiding spot. In fact, to announce it so loudly as for Gai to hear and then leave I had presumed he was doing it to trick Gai into coming out in case he was somewhere in the building where he could hear him. And Gai just blasted out of the sofa to get it! When they drank the water that was left over I was almost concerned that it could have been a further trap.. And… none of that was.. Sawai tricked himself into thinking Gai wasn’t here and then told Gai exactly where the tape was. All of which led to him snapping in desperation and insanity during the rain.. He will make a Gai to save his own skin. I do like how Sawai has been given a few sides even if I don’t particularly care for him!
