So this is how it all began. I first had to question why the Hirata family would know about Gai's fighting skills. I assume he doesn't fight at school and he trains at home. Why would anyone know, unless I thought, the Hirata family were in charge of those gangsters in some way. However, Gai never even thought that was weird so maybe it's normal for people to know about his fighting skills.
Either way, Hirata came over nervously and blinded Gai with greed. The ability to continue living the life he had just lost. I love the metaphor that he was "floating in the air", one I associate with Kaiji for when he gets high on success and loses his footing. It's nice to see such a human weakness in Gai. It led him to accept such suspicious circumstances. Taking money, touching a knife that was just covered by a cloth, and overall entering this place at night with eyes everywhere. Everyone knew what was going on and they led Gai into tripping on the corpse. His panic in chapter 1 makes total sense and now I see that he knows absolutely what happened. He knows the people he needs to get revenge on and he needs them to clear his innocence. They are so rich I can see how they could influence his fate and I can see why they chose a loner orphan living alone.
I adore the page "I was being devoured little by little by the Hirata families authority and power". The words and the huge shot of the mansion felt powerful.
