The original manga of The Cat Returns by Aoi Hiiragi carries a far more subtle and evocative message compared to its movie adaptation. In the manga, the central theme revolves around grappling with the loss of a loved one, presented with a magical realist flair that blurs the boundaries between the internal and external worlds. However, the film focuses exclusively on the idea of believing in oneself, which comes across as overly simplistic when taken alone. This shift led to significant changes in key plot elements, ultimately detracting from Aoi Hiiragi's original, mystical vision. Additionally, the manga features numerous dreamlike scenes that were omitted in the movie, some of which delve into metaphysical territory that is challenging to discuss without spoiling the experience. The manga exudes a high-art quality, prompting deep questions about whether our inner worlds can be considered "alive" and what it truly means to form connections with other beings. It achieves this through its use of ambiguity during pivotal moments, creating an ethereal and enigmatic atmosphere. The manga bears a resemblance to a story by Kenji Miyazawa in its tone and depth.

In summary, I highly recommend the manga. The movie adaptation fell short of capturing Aoi Hiiragi's artistic vision. It's often difficult to appreciate a film adaptation when the original source material is clearly superior. That said, I still suggest watching the movie, but only after reading the manga. Comparing and contrasting the two versions offers an interesting perspective. On a lighter note, the title "The Cat Returns" seems out of place in the context of the movie's storyline but fits perfectly within the narrative of the original manga.

The manga is contained in a single volume and is relatively brief. My main critique of the movie is that it altered the core meaning of the story. While the film does incorporate most elements from the manga, it modifies certain crucial plot points.

<p>"Isn't this the Eye of Meng in the dream?" she asked surprised. Picking up the gold crystal lantern that did not emit any light at that moment.</p>
