We have the big guy Alpha, though in this case, our main character (MC) isn't good at studying, lol. Both are poor, but here, our MC isn't that good at fighting and instead spends his time live-streaming for money. The new kid, a machine learning (ML) transfer from a big city, becomes his deskmate, and of course, the ML is the same height as the MC, strong, and a top student. Both the MC and ML have traumatic or painful pasts and are dealing with the repercussions, which gives them opportunities to comfort each other during their darkest times.
This story uses the trope of the MC having Omega insensitivity syndrome, and the two of them suddenly developing some sort of Alpha compatibility syndrome, forcing them to stay close. This leads to two people who inexplicably became enemies because the ML didn't like the MC's pheromones to interact more closely. To add to the mix, the ML randomly becomes the MC's neighbor.
The ML has been through a lot. His so-called parents are actual villains, and it's hard to imagine how he managed to survive the abuse he endured. Fortunately, he meets the MC, a ball of sunshine who also struggles with major depression. The journey to getting together is quite rough, though. Our MC is very much a straight man and repeatedly denies his feelings, making it obvious to everyone else but himself. However, when he finally opens his eyes, he shows no shame in openly clinging to and expressing his love, which somewhat makes up for his past denials.
, it's a standard coming-of-age love story between two Alphas. Cute but nothing too groundbreaking.
AxA (Alpha x Alpha) pairings are my absolute favorite in ABO novels because they are so rare! Often, there’s some twist where an Alpha turns out to be an Omega or was an Omega all along, so it’s refreshing when both main characters are actually Alphas (and stay that way, lol).
As the title suggests, the main character (MC) and love interest (ML) start off disliking each other due to a bad first impression.
The MC considers himself a typical Alpha who prefers Omegas.
The ML, on the other hand, likes Alphas, but the MC doesn’t know this and assumes they are both straight. This leads to a lot of obliviousness and questioning from the MC.
There’s a good amount of hurt/comfort dynamics, especially with the whole "they can’t be apart from each other during the susceptible period" and school conflicts. Both characters get their moments as the "damsel in distress," so it’s not just the ML constantly saving the MC. I particularly enjoy how the ML evolves from being cold and distant to genuinely caring for the MC. The novel is relatively short, so the progression from enemies to friends is a bit quick but still feels reasonable.
The dynamic between them reminds me of *Saye*! The ML transfers to a new school, was the top student at his old school, and keeps bumping into the MC—they’re desk mates, next-door neighbors, and their pheromones are compatible despite both being Alphas. At one point, the MC even calls the ML ‘xuebai’ (a term for someone who is pure and innocent), which adds a cute touch.
It feels like one of those tender coming-of-age stories where the characters face their own challenges and gradually open up to each other. While the novel doesn’t delve too deeply into these issues, the focus is clearly on the blossoming friendship and romance between the main characters. Some events do seem to happen out of nowhere with little buildup, but this isn’t meant to be a complex or deep novel. , it’s very sweet and a quick, enjoyable read. I’d give it an easy four stars.
