Instead of leveraging its explicit imagery for mere titillation, Hanafuda employs it to narrate a profoundly tragic story, pulling no punches.
The plot feels almost Shakespearean (if Shakespeare had a penchant for the risqué); it's intricate, fast-moving, and intensely dramatic. There's identity theft, murder, kidnapping, forced prostitution, bestiality, rape, and even pedophilia—all presented unflinchingly in visual terms, so this is not for anyone who might be disturbed by such content. All these elements unfold in a fantastical/folkloric setting reminiscent of the Edo period, accompanied by absolutely stunning artwork (some of the finest I've encountered in manga). More specifically, the use of color and pre-drawn patterns creates exquisite costumes and deeply immersive backgrounds that evoke both the Edo era and the renowned card game from which the manga draws its name.
This is the sole work of fiction without music that has ever moved me to tears, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to those who cherish visually captivating storytelling.
There is an officially licensed digital version available in English through FAKKU books, and that's how I suggest you experience it.
