Moreover, this one-shot was extremely brief—just a few pages. I'm not sure what the author was aiming for; maybe it's some kind of prologue? But I won't overthink it too much.
In any case, if you're curious to see characters outside of the Case Closed manga, it might be worth taking a look at it.
The story is good and enjoyable, but it's something that's been done before, and better. Additionally, there's the fact that the protagonist, Terumi, is supposed to be able to tell when people are lying. However, the way she does so seems more like she's reading their minds than anything else, as she can "hear the truth of what someone is thinking just by looking at them." What I do appreciate about this is that it reveals a person's true self, whether good or bad, rather than simply stating "Oh, yeah. They're lying," which I think was necessary given this is a six-page one-shot.
The art follows Aoyama-sensei's typical style, the one he's been using for years and has had perfected since around volume 20 of Detective Conan. I've heard people criticize the style for its simplicity, but have you ever tried drawing in that style? It's incredibly difficult! Also, since there were no slip-ups that I noticed here, I have no issues with it.
Characterization has to be the weakest part of this, but that can largely be attributed to the fact that this is only SIX PAGES LONG and they had to fit an introduction and semi-plot into that. Moreover, much of Terumi's character is shown through dialogue and her mannerisms rather than monologue, so I believe there was an adequate amount considering the length. Terumi's character is likable, as are the supporting characters aside from a certain one...
I think the biggest hindrance this one-shot faces is its length, which prevents more character development and plot. Personally, I really enjoyed this quick little adventure, and if it gets serialized, I'll be sure to check it out.
Overall, I give this brief trip into the land of mind-reading a 7 out of 10.

The One Shot was brief, but I believe that's typical of Aoyama Gosho. While it didn't blow me away, he certainly didn't disappoint me either. Overall, I was satisfied with it. <p>
