It may not align with traditional Christmas narratives, but it brims with its own kind of enchantment.
Kuromi, a 17-year-old girl, accidentally bumps into a guy on the street and ends up bonded to him, transforming into a Santa while he shape-shifts into her reindeer. Kaito, the reindeer, is undeniably handsome, and you'll adore this charming couple. Together, they find themselves in numerous quirky and humorous situations, making for an entertaining read. This isn't a deep or profound story—it's purely fun and comedic.
The artwork is beautifully crafted romantic shoujo style, complete with stunningly attractive bishie guys. Additionally, it features other stories like "Sweet After Bites/Sweet Lunacy," which revolves around a vampire guy and a little girl, adding more charm. There are also tales of mischievous reindeers and black reindeers who didn't fulfill their duties, bringing intriguing twists to the narrative. One minor issue is that the characters remain 17 for three years (spanning 3 Christmases, equating to 3 years).
"Yoroshiku Master" is one of my favorite mangas, though I don't often include it on my lists. I've read it about 3 or 4 times, first picking it up 3 or 4 years ago, and I re-read it every Christmas season. Sweet Rein is a story centered around Santa Claus and his reindeer. Here, the FMC represents Santa Claus, while the reindeer isn't just an ordinary animal but a boy in servitude to Santa, meaning he obeys Santa's commands no matter the distance between them. This establishes a master-slave dynamic between Santa Claus and the reindeer. Additionally, the reindeer can transform at Santa Claus's request into either a reindeer or a high school boy.
Most of the series takes place either during Christmas or in beach episodes, which is quite odd. As a result, the series has significant time skips between chapters. They seem to spend about two or maybe three Christmases. The series isn't particularly memorable; it's short and enjoyable while reading, but there's nothing particularly remarkable about it. It reminds me of Ao Haru Ride, but even that had good character development and something unique. In Sweet Rein, it's either Christmas or a beach episode.
I actually liked the MMC. He was forward and kind, with good chemistry with the FMC. The rest of the cast was also decent. The black Santa Claus, which could be seen as racially insensitive, did the typical "bad but not that bad" kind of stuff. There was also a weak love triangle towards the end.
The romance was pleasant, but the ending is problematic. It's predictable, yet still disappointing how the author chose to leave it with a relatively open conclusion.
TLDR: It was decent and fun until the ending, which is somewhat sad. The one-shots that came with it weren't much better either. Rating: 5/10.
