Rural Romance: Handsome Top x Charming Bottom

A gentle and reserved handsome top (Du Yunyan) x a handsome bottom from a wealthy family with a carefree attitude (Gu Wenxi)

After quarrels with his father and his girlfriend cheating on him, the wealthy young master Gu Wenxi leaves home and runs away to a small mountain village known for its soul-cleansing backpacker atmosphere. There, he meets the beautiful and mysterious innkeeper Du Yunyan. Shortly after, when his credit card gets frozen, he shamelessly asks Du Yunyan to let him stay and work at the inn.

Du Yunyan is meticulous, while Gu Wenxi is carefree and unrestrained. After stumbling through a winter together, their attitudes toward each other subtly change. At this moment, Gu Wenxi receives another call urging him to return home…

“Between us, this is good enough.”

“What if I come back? Will you let me finish what I wanted to say today?”

“You won’t come back, and don’t do anything unworthy anymore.”

The geographical setting is a fictional southern mountain village, with fictional place names and no real prototypes.
The top initially has feelings for someone else (never been together), and there’s a minor rival in love for the bottom (limited plot).

    One of my favorite aspects of every novel lies in unraveling the characters' motivations. There's always a backstory, and occasionally it takes an unexpected turn, like in the case of Du Yunyan's seemingly emotionless demeanor. This book is a captivating read, and I highly recommend it. After finishing this one, be sure to explore the author's other work, "What Are Your Tastes," which I found equally enjoyable, if not more so. Kudos to Shanghai Fantasy for their outstanding translation.

    This is a heartwarming and gentle portrayal of everyday life. The identities of the main characters, Gong and Shou, were cleverly concealed until a pivotal scene, which added an element of intrigue without overshadowing their authentic personalities. The development of the relationship between the protagonist (MC) and the love interest (ML) felt organic, despite the initial mention of the ML having feelings for someone else. However, these emotions did not deter his growth towards the MC. Throughout their journey, they supported and uplifted one another during their uncertain and blossoming period. If you're seeking a low-drama, soothing read with a touch of sweetness, this novel is definitely worth recommending.

    This book was an excellent read, featuring well-developed and mature characters. Their connection evolved smoothly and the romance was delightful without being overly idealized. I appreciated how the main character (MC) didn't solely blame his ex-girlfriend for their problems; instead, he held his best friend accountable for his despicable actions, which added depth to the story.

    The portrayal of the male lead's (ML) ex was nuanced, avoiding clichés – they weren't portrayed as foolish and maintained a positive image. The MC's family dynamic stood out positively, as they provided support without resorting to the typical drama found in other stories where step-siblings often serve as one-dimensional antagonists. In this tale, the step-siblings were sensible and善良, while the real issue lied with the irresponsible father.

    Overall, it was a heartwarming, realistic story that offered a refreshing take on everyday life.

    (4.5 stars) I don't usually delve into romance novels; my preference lies more in action, fantasy, and stories that emphasize intricate world-building. I grabbed this book as a casual read, but it exceeded my expectations. The narrative focuses on the central characters' (MC and ML) relationship, which is refreshingly low on unnecessary tension. Their love story feels authentic and well-developed.

    What sets this apart from many Chinese novels I've come across is the portrayal of the characters, particularly the male lead (ML). Unlike the common stereotype of a weak bottom/shou needing constant care, this novel presents a strong and self-sufficient dynamic between the main couple. They make for an inspiring and realistic partnership. The plot twists were a pleasant surprise, catching me off guard with the identity of the main antagonist (gong), which added an engaging element to the story. Overall, I find this book a breath of fresh air in the genre.

    This narrative offers a delightful departure from the norm. It ranks among the finest examples of slice-of-life literature I've come across. I wholeheartedly adored the protagonists. The pacing is impeccable, with each event unfolding seamlessly – neither too drawn out nor hasty. Reading this has genuinely brought me joy; it sparks a desire within me to experience love as beautifully as Du Yunyan and Gu Wenxin do. I sincerely wish them both continued health and happiness.
