Before Penny he was physically and emotionally abused, forced into slavery and was about to be sold only to be bought (not freed) by this woman who continues to emotionally manipulate an extremely vulnerable man in what is clearly a power dynamic that puts him at her feet and mercy.
She never saw him as anything other than her ticket to freedom. Eclis was never a person before her eyes and that’s just super sad. Penny is absolutely reaping what she sowed. I love her character and how flawed she is, but it is what it is. There aren’t really heroes in this story and that’s what makes it fun, but yeah, I don’t get people who hate on Eclis like he’s complete trash–he totally deserved better, most of all characters hahaha like hell he doesn’t get any breaks, the author herself only treats him as a plot device.
