REALLY feels like the author got some feedback from an editor after 20 chapters of cartoonishly, buffoonishly evil people in the church that it is exceptionally uninteresting to make an entire country that one-dimensional and they started showing a few people there had brains while quietly removing some of the established evil people.
Does it make dedicating any time to the slave trade guy almost entirely irrelevant? Yeah, he could have basically not been shown at all and just had that entire early scene done with faceless bad guys.
Does it make the overall story much better? Oh man yeah, absolutely worth a period of clunky plot structure to dig the story out of an utterly unengaging second perspective plotline the series is literally named after. I'd rather they salvage it and just try to subtly do-over the antagonists rather than making everyone such short-sighted boobs that the most they can elicit is an eye-roll at their next stupid decision.
