I was surprised but didn't feel like it is harsh, in my mind the mamodos always had a... fluid characteristic to their constitution.
We had some examples of adult ones in a few flashbacks, and the disparity between the children and adults (in some cases) was really big, and that is without considering the MANY "ethnicities", their naturally strong bodies be they male or female and that some do have shapeshifting abilities that aren't their "magic", so it wouldn't be strange that with certain conditions, they can "shape" their bodies as they grow however they like... with limits obviously.
