This is a short series, but it's very good. However the caveat is that even if you read the main series manga, you probably will not really know what's going on for the last third of the chapters as the manga doesn't cover the arc that sets Beast into motion. Without spoilers, I'd say the best way to understand the background and get the most out of Beast is to watch the anime. I think watching all of it is a worthwhile experience, but if you want just the specifics, it's episodes 13-16 (season 2's first 4 episodes). You can also read the second light novel for the same material. After that, come back here, and not only will the ending to Beast make sense, but it'll be a way more impactful read.
