That was pretty obvious that a man who after reaching the pinnacle of his 1st crest power with a black beard (30 years old at the bear minimum, but probably older, I didn't care enough to check past the 1st chapter for fact checking), wouldn't be as powerful as the as his teenage self with a lower mana level. In the first chapter he states that the 4th crest has greater potential. The best explanation is from video games: anyone who starts over from a maxed character to a character who has higher potential, it would take them a while to get the the level of the pervious max character. Remember the reason he started over was so he could go beyond his limits.
