I was expecting Yuki's chain to end up in the commander's hand somehow, forcing the fight to end as a front with a "you did well, I'll concede this one" to avoid any reward shenanigans in front of everyone

It's actually good. I might have to say that it is even better than the previous mangas and Anime seasons. Still I would prefer LN I only read from the latest anime ep to year 1 ending.

Things that I liked about this
1.the monologues and thought process of mc is explored a lot and way better than just knowing about it at the end like in anime.
2.the goofy mc persona in the manga is totally revamped. He is exactly like what u expect from AK.

Things I kinda not liked
1.the dialogues could hav been compressed bit more it's not like I hate it (but some conversations could hav been cut since it felt pointless. They r trying to spoonfeed the plot). It will sometimes feel like the infodump from jjk.
