    Im sure they were romantically involved a bit before Shuuji death. Remember, Sumi and Shuuji marriage was empty and broken on the inside. Plus, she knew about his husband unfaithfulness.
    My guess, she went to Sakuraba place looking for emotional support and they ended up having a passionate night.
    Shuuji discovers the fact, confronts both of them and is killed by Sakuraba (or Sumi, with Sakuraba as witness)
