I can't blame Thorfinn for sticking to his pacifism because his redemption was hard fought and earned for many years since the day he quit being a viking. He clings to his pacifism but what he's naive about isn't that he should just change his ways. His naive mistake is that he doesn't realize he's not the only actor on the stage. He can't control what others do, what he should've done is acknowledge and broker a strict peace and trade agreement by keeping a distance from the tribes. In other words, they should've settled it with words before something happened instead of just waiting for relations to prosper. The natives and settlers would get along but they could also spark a problem that would've snowballed into war eventually if they got too close and that's exactly what happened. If they just kept to each other's borders then it would allow time to slowly reach out to each other rather than getting too close only sped up the inevitable.
