I'm starting to feel that this reset trope is just a lazy way of not having to do properly paced power scaling.
The author just makes his characters unreasonably OP and then has to scale it all the way back.

like you don't want to "burden" this guy and so you decide to keep deceiving him that he's worthless? making him live around people hiding their identity from him? basically taking away any agency in his life? pretty messed up
and also annoying as a reader because like this he can't ever really grow, change or form deep relationships
i get that it's used for jokes but you can't expect me to take a story seriously when something so core to its heart is messed up and frustrating. and besides, you can still make "lacks common sense" jokes even if you properly tell him that he's amazing

It doesn't show a deception. If anything it would show a deception if this somehow made her EVEN MORE attracted to him. Like it's a genuinely good reason to exit a relationship.
