I actually completed reading this a couple of months back, but given the lack of reviews, I decided to craft one myself. Hands Off! appealed to me primarily due to its unique storyline and character dynamics, setting it apart from other manga I've encountered. The narrative centers on Kotarou, his cousin Tatsuki, and their classmate Yuuta, three seemingly ordinary schoolboys whose lives are anything but mundane.
Kotarou possesses an uncanny ability to influence others' powers and possibly has healing ESP, though he remains unaware of these talents. Tatsuki, much to his chagrin, acquired post-cognitive abilities after a childhood encounter with Kotarou. Meanwhile, Yuuta can sense and discern people's emotions by observing their auras. Their extraordinary capabilities make for a compelling read, far from typical or predictable.
Tatsuki's powers have strained his relationship with Kotarou, creating a barrier between them. However, as the story progresses, Tatsuki confronts his feelings towards Kotarou, complicating his resentment. What I found most captivating were the interactions among the characters, rather than the abundant action sequences.
The artwork occasionally left something to be desired, yet there were moments showcasing impressive skill, particularly in conveying emotion and character design. While some might not appreciate the art style, I found it appealing despite it not being my absolute favorite.
The characters are well-developed, likable, and intriguing. Kotarou is eager to assist others and dislikes being a burden. Despite facing ridicule for his feminine features, he garners respect later on. Tatsuki is a complex character—either you love him or you don't. I appreciated his depth, his harsh exterior masking genuine concern for Kotarou. Yuuta added comic relief as the flirtatious and brash type, eventually forming a strong bond with Kotarou. Supporting characters like Mio, Kotarou's girlfriend, and Kazuma, a disturbed youth with ESP, also play significant roles.
While Hands Off! may not resonate with everyone, it was thoroughly enjoyable for me. I recommend giving it a try if you're looking for something distinctive and engaging.
I was genuinely quite let down to discover that this isn't a boys' love manga. Honestly, the level of unresolved sexual tension between Kotarou, Tatsuki, and Yuuto is incredibly apparent. I didn't realize subtext could be this overt. Despite my enjoyment of this manga, I noticed that as the series progressed, the storylines grew somewhat repetitive and stale.
