At some point, I got my hands on the first volume of Gundam Wing: The Last Outpost (known as Dual Story - G-Unit in Japan). Over the years, I read it a couple of times and always planned to find the other two volumes, but it never became a high enough priority. After stumbling upon some convenient scans, I sped through all three volumes in less than a week—which is unusually fast for me—and was glad I hadn't bought the final volumes. The Last Outpost has all the elements of a decent shounen mecha series but lacks the time to delve deeply into any of them due to its short duration.

This manga is a very quick read, with a story that moves at lightning speed. I found myself finishing entire volumes in one sitting, not because I was captivated, but because each page seemed to fly by in an instant. Tokita-sensei uses many large panels, and the dialogue isn't particularly dense. There just isn't much on any page to hold your attention for long, so entire chapters of 30-50 pages would pass by faster than expected (though I don't know the exact page counts, there are only about 4-5 chapters per volume).

Tokita-sensei's art is... decent. I didn't see any illustrations that blew me away, and the character models sometimes looked a bit off, but overall it wasn't terrible. The character designs weren't especially inspired or unique, looking pretty standard for 90s Gundam. The Gundam designs themselves were cool, but they eventually became cluttered with accessories. Additionally, the action could be hard to follow in the panels, and I never felt a strong sense of flow from the fight choreography. Much like the Gundam Wing anime, many battles boiled down to firing laser beams at distant enemies, which is far less impressive in still black and white.

The story of The Last Outpost feels like the skeleton of a much longer series. Plot points play out with the bare minimum character interaction needed to make sense. It uses many cliché story beats typical of shounen, which could have worked if there was more time to build up the characters. However, everything is so rushed that you don't get invested in the characters, making even the clichés feel unearned. New villains appear every few chapters, characters have obvious secret identities, and the final "plot twist" can be seen coming from miles away.

Much like the story, almost every character seems pulled straight from the standard shounen playbook. There's the cool and skilled older brother, the hot-headed younger brother who envies his brother's skill, the girlfriend who is 100% tsundere, and so on. Only a few characters undergo any growth, and due to the short duration of the series, that development isn't deep or well-built.

For me, the real highlight of this series is the yon-koma at the end of every volume. These short gags feature characters from almost all the 90s Gundam series. In volumes 2 & 3, there are enough four-panel gags to nearly match the length of a regular chapter. While the comedy isn't groundbreaking, the chibi renditions of the characters are cute and humorous. Here, we really see how big a Gundam fan Tokita-sensei is. Most strips hardly mention UC Gundam, which is refreshing. It's cool to see someone celebrating the first wave of alternate timeline Gundam series. By the third volume, there are finally tons of strips dedicated to the original UC Gundams and the UC OVA series from the 90s.

So, who should read Gundam Wing: G-Unit? If you happen upon it, it's a decent read. You could easily finish all three volumes in one evening and forget everything that happened just as quickly. I wouldn't recommend seeking out and buying the volumes. Even though it's related to Wing, it doesn't offer much to Wing fans. It adds extra plot that takes place far from Earth, with almost no connection to the main anime plot. Read this if you're a bored Gundam fan looking for something light and breezy with plenty of Gundams.

Thanks for letting me know, It's a shame so many sites drop these series when officials are out. I get that they don't want to risk issues but the sites monetization's are egregious, Take Tapas for example. their "ink" packs are $60 (CAD) and that get's me enough for.. a days worth of reading. (160 chapters at their price of 375 per) Just let me pay a monthly subscriptions or keep latest chapters locked like Webtoon ffs.

Chapter 15 alone makes the whole series worth reading.
