Probable the generic shonen you are used to seeing with the big rival/tournament arc showdown type shit for each important character taking place and each fight taking like 3 episodes. Or simply because the main character didn't struggle with the obstacles and walked right to and through the main objective. Lastly, it could be that the supporting cast wasn't built up enough.

Maybe you should start to dissect the criticism, because the novel is way better.
The medium of manga isn't the right one for this story. That doesn't mean the manga is "shitty" but it is way worse then the novel.
