    It was never just about serving others. The problems the many-ears had to overcome were 1) that they couldn't believe in a better future, resigning themselves to the status quo and doing nothing to help those who couldn't keep pace, and 2) that they saw no value in anything about themselves besides their hearing - it didn't matter WHO you were, because WHAT you were was a many-ears.

    The carrot isn't some deus ex machina "everything's gonna be okay" ass-pull. It's a metaphor for all the chances the many-ears refused to take out of fear of failure, and all the things they failed to notice because of their own pessimism. They were ashamed to be serving the carrots to anyone because it was a symbol of their tribe and thus, in their eyes, clearly worthless to anyone they deemed above their own station.

    Man... japanese tv is crazy, why the hell would Megumi need to really walk on fire for a show? And worst yet... I can totally see this stupid shit happening in real life, Japanese tv is CRAZY.
