An overly competent employee + an utterly incompetent management structure + time = the surest way to see an organization crumble. Even a good manager would fall to the temptation to leave everything on the shoulders of a single employee that could get things done in half the time twice a good, but they would set up redundancies so that employee doesn't become the sole foundation that the organization rest upon. Their entire guild rotted from the inside, and nobody noticed because Rust was good enough to basically run it on his merits alone. Two bad managers, a superior that is willing to put those bad managers in charge based on their personal connections instead of their competencies, and years for things to get worse and worse. At this point, they could be geniuses and the organization would still be doomed.
