An undocumented immigrant of unspecified nationality, she is nicknamed "Mataro" by Kafuka but goes by "Maria" most of the time. She acquired a male student's birth certificate and attends school under his name. Fascinated by "Japan's abundance," Maria collects food and discarded items from the ground or garbage bins. Despite her erratic behavior and peculiar dislike for panties and shoes, her disheveled look and illegal status, paired with a cheerful smile, often lead people to give her things.
The name "Sekiutsu Tarō" originates from seki-uttarō, which translates to "You sold your own register, didn't you?" or "I'll sell you my register." Thanks to their optimistic outlooks, Kafuka and Maria get along splendidly. Though legally considered a boy due to the purchased birth certificate, Maria is actually female.
