Saphir, known as Sapphire in the English dub, is the Alchemist of the Black Moon Clan and the younger brother of Prince Demand. He is noted for being more cautious and rational compared to his companions. Despite inventing them, he is the only member of the Clan who does not wear earrings made from Black Crystal.
In the manga, Saphir prefers working with droids, the least significant of the Clan's minions, over serving his unpredictable older brother. He questions Wiseman's intentions and Prince Demand's wisdom in following him. This provokes a violent reaction from Prince Demand, who accuses Saphir of seeking power for himself. When Sailor Moon is kidnapped by Prince Demand and brought to Nemesis, she stumbles into Saphir’s laboratory. There, he admits their plans were flawed and that she was innocent, yet still tries to kill her. Saphir believes all conflict stems from her and the Silver Crystal's fearsome power. This causes Neo Queen Serenity to activate Sailor Moon’s crystal, enabling her transformation even on Nemesis. The immense power destabilizes Nemesis. Saphir and Demand are rescued by Black Lady and led to Wiseman’s castle, where Wiseman uses mind control and grants Saphir "Demon Hands." It is later revealed that Demand’s "Evil Eye" made him immune to Wiseman’s spell.
In the anime, Saphir is portrayed more sympathetically, like the rest of his clan. A past relationship between Saphir and Petz, the oldest Ayakashi sister, is hinted at, although they never share a scene in the manga. The English dub also suggests an unrequited love for Esmeraude. In a flashback, Saphir remembers growing up on bleak Nemesis with his brother, who promised to show him real flowers on Earth one day. Saphir overhears Wiseman plotting to use Prince Demand and others for his own goals. Barely escaping with his life, Saphir steals the Black Crystal's power and takes it to Earth's past. He briefly reunites with Petz and is aided by the Sailor Senshi but is killed by Wiseman before he can warn his brother about the impending betrayal. After his death, the bandage on his head falls off, revealing his Black Moon symbol has vanished.
